Hollywood has always had a thing for yachts. Tom Hanks battled Somali pirates aboard the Alexander Maersk cargo ship in Captain Phillips. Titanic gave us the world's most expensive replica and an iceberg we'll never forget.

But Netflix's latest thriller, The Woman in Cabin 10, takes it up a notch by filming almost entirely aboard Savannah, one of the most awarded and eco-conscious superyachts ever built.

The film stars Keira Knightley as Laura 'Lo' Blacklock, a travel journalist sent to cover a luxury cruise from the UK to Norway. It’s supposed to be an easy story to cover with beautiful destinations, fine dining, and endless champagne. But things take a turn when she hears a scream in the night and sees what she believes is a woman being thrown overboard from Cabin 10.

The only problem? Cabin 10 is empty, and every passenger is accounted for which leads to everyone thinking Laura is losing her mind.

The movie, directed by Simon Stone, is based on Ruth Ware's 2016 novel of the same name and also stars Guy Pearce, David Ajala, and Hannah Waddingham. Still, much of the attention has fallen on the yacht itself and for good reason.

Savannah isn't your average superyacht. Delivered by Dutch shipyard Feadship in 2015, the 274-foot vessel was one of the first hybrids of its kind, combining advanced engineering with a focus on sustainability. She’s won design awards and remains one of the most admired yachts on the water. In the film, she’s renamed The Aurora Borealis which is an appropriately moody name for a thriller set at sea.

The yacht made her way to Dorset, England for the shoot, which lasted nearly three weeks and came with a reported price tag of $1.5 million AUD per week. Not exactly a budget indie production.

The interiors of Savannah are filled with luxury including six suites that sleep twelve, along with an owner's cabin with its own private deck, dining room, saloon, office, marble bathroom, and terrace complete with a helipad. There's also a gym, beauty salon, spa, and a nine-meter mosaic pool surrounded by sun loungers, all styled by the acclaimed CG Design studio in Paris.

Still, the real showstopper is the Nemo Lounge which is a submerged underwater viewing room that doubles as a private cinema. Picture stadium-style seating, a drop-down screen, and floor-to-ceiling windows offering live views of passing marine life. It's the kind of space that would make James Bond jealous, and it provides the perfect eerie backdrop for a film about paranoia and isolation.

As glamorous as it sounds, director Simon Stone made it clear that filming aboard Savannah was more restrictive than relaxing. The production team had to follow a long list of rules to protect the pristine interiors, and those rules were non-negotiable.

Stone described the experience as far from the luxury vacation people imagined. A lot of people expected the shoot to be glamorous, he said, but the reality involved serious restrictions. No one was allowed to eat or drink while working and crew members couldn't even hold coffee cups. For a film set, it was the opposite of comfort and was more like working in a floating museum where one wrong move could cost you an arm and a leg.

Still, Stone admits it was worth it. The design of the yacht, he explained, was done with such restraint and taste that every space felt both calming and ridiculously beautiful. Of course, what works for actual superyacht guests doesn't always translate to screen. Savannah's interiors are airy, bright, and designed to feel open and serene. But for a psychological thriller, that posed a problem. The production team had to darken the cabins, dim the natural light, and create a sense of claustrophobia and foreboding.

Some sets were built from scratch at Shepperton Studios outside London, including mirrored hallways and a creepy library. The goal was to take this sleek, modern superyacht and make it feel unsettling, like a floating trap rather than a dream vacation.

And that's the real genius of the setting. There's something inherently unnerving about superyachts when you strip away the champagne and Instagram filters and because of this, the yacht becomes more than just a backdrop in the movie. It mirrors Laura’s unraveling state of mind becoming a place where luxury turns to unease and no one can be trusted. 

And maybe that’s the point. Superyachts are built to be flawless, untouchable. But when something cracks that illusion, perfection itself starts to feel unsettling and The Woman in Cabin 10 plays with that tension perfectly by turning one of the world’s most beautiful yachts into something quietly menacing.

Lily concept was revealed at the Dubai International Boat Show last month and isn't just another floating mansion. It's a completely new definition of what a yacht can be. It has an innovative asymmetric design and an energy system that could make traditional fuel obsolete.

The 331-foot yacht design was developed in collaboration with Vripack and Lateral Naval Architects, and takes its inspiration from lily pads because even billionaires appreciate a good botanical reference. But this isn't just an aesthetic gimmick. The asymmetric structure gives the yacht an organic, almost weightless presence on the water, while large windows and extensive glasswork blur the line between inside and outside.

Paris Baloumis, who is the group marketing director at Oceanco, emphasised this vision, and said, "Lily is a testament to what's possible when design meets advanced construction and engineering."

Lily welcomes the people via an elegant elevator and stepping stones across an actual lily pond. The elegant exterior of the yacht is designed by British studio RWD and Chahan Interior Design created a luxurious interior that is very much over the top. And because performance matters just as much as aesthetics, De Voogt Naval Architects is handling the engineering.

The 2500GT yacht's steel-and-aluminium build has five decks, a beach club, a swimming pool, and an extended bow big enough for a helipad. It also has a 45-foot beam and 12-foot draught that has modern engineering features, including the Feadship Advanced Electrical Drive (FAED) program's propulsion system that minimizes drag and maximizes efficiency.

But what makes Project 714 even better is its advanced hydrodynamic efficiency which has been achieved through extensive computational fluid dynamics analysis. The hydrodynamic design is so advanced that it eliminates the need for traditional drive shafts and rudders, replacing them with contra-rotating thrusters. In simple words, this just means smoother sailing, better fuel efficiency, and even more onboard comfort.

The yacht is set for delivery later this year and will likely be another masterpiece in Stroll's collection of high-performance machines. As expected, the video exploded online and different reactions poured in with some people awed and others just having a laugh. One user said: "It's giving giant pirate ship." Another joked: "That's not Jeff, that's Captain Jack Sparrow." Clearly, Koru's massive masts and dramatic presence reminded many of the infamous Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Some tourists are definitely excited at the chance of spotting Koru sailing by, but not every island greets Bezos with open arms.

A great example of this comes from last month when Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, visited Montserrat, a quiet Caribbean Island. While some locals grabbed their phones for photos, others weren't exactly rolling out the welcome mat. Rumours spread fast, and people were wondering whether the world's second-richest man was there to snap up land.

The panic reached such a high level that Montserrat's Prime Minister, Reuben Meade, had to step in and clarify: "He [Bezos] came here as a tourist." With that statement, tensions finally eased.

Carl Le Souef wanted to build the world’s largest superyacht — a 728-foot behemoth dubbed Somnio — embodying the idea that if you’re going to dream, you may as well dream big. Sadly, big ideas come with big invoices, and the Australian tycoon has learned the hard way that passion projects don’t simply run on ambition alone; they run on cold, hard cash.

First imagined in 2019 with British design giants Winch Design, Somnio was set to cost a staggering $500 million (c. A$800 million).

However, after an initial down payment of $250,000, Le Souef decided to ghost the design team on three subsequent invoices worth over $900,000. Unsurprisingly, Winch Design wasn’t about to let that slide.

Instead of pouring more time and money into the mammoth residential yacht, they filed a hefty lawsuit.

By January this year, the High Court of Justice in London ruled Le Souef personally liable for the unpaid invoices... plus interest.

True to its Latin name — “to dream” — Somnio was meant to be a floating utopia for 39 ultra-wealthy backers, each snapping up a custom apartment starting at $11.2 million.

Plans included every available luxury: top-tier restaurants, a 10,000-bottle wine cellar, an onboard beach club, high-end fitness facilities, and more.

Under the guidance of former The World captain Erik Bredhe, construction was slated to begin at Norwegian shipyard Vard, with a scheduled mid-2024 launch.

Now that dream is stuck in legal limbo. While the numbers looked good on paper — $6.5 million in design fees, $500 million overall budget — reality bites when checks stop clearing. Somnio’s road to completion remains murky to say the least.

Le Souef first rose to prominence by founding Dr. LeWinn’s Private Formula, a leading Australian skincare brand he later sold in 2009.

Since March 2022, the South Aegean coast of Turkey has been home to a particularly controversial visitor: Eclipse, the 164-metre superyacht owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Built in 2009 for a punchy €350 million (c. A$590 million), this former “world’s largest” private yacht isn’t just turning heads, it’s also racking up mind-boggling costs.

Despite being docked in Marmaris Marina, Eclipse relies on its own generators 24/7 to keep the air conditioning running, shielding its opulent interiors from mould-rearing sea mist.

A good lick of energy also goes into keeping its anti-paparazzi laser going...

That constant power drain doesn’t come cheap... or particularly sustainable. Burning roughly one tonne of fuel per day, Eclipse’s environmental footprint is immense, especially at a time when global conversations focus on cutting carbon emissions.

Yet the yacht’s daily running costs go beyond fuel: mooring fees reportedly top 100,000 TL (around A$5,000) a day.

Inside, Eclipse boasts 18 guest suites decked out in black wood with silver rubbed into the open grain, limed wenge, and buffalo hide.

Artworks, high-spec finishes, and the need for unceasing climate control ensure this floating palace remains in pristine condition, no matter the eye-watering cost.

Eclipse’s extended stay in Turkey is no holiday. Abramovich, hit by extensive Western sanctions in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, needed a spot where his yacht wouldn’t face government seizure.

Turkey’s decision not to enforce sanctions made Marmaris a convenient sanctuary, prompting criticism over how global financial restrictions can be easily sidestepped by those with deep enough pockets.

Meanwhile, Abramovich’s second superyacht, Solaris, sits in Bodrum, further underscoring Turkey’s role as a safe harbour for sanctioned oligarchs.

But there’s no denying Eclipse’s jaw-dropping engineering. From two helicopter landing pads to an onboard submarine and multiple pools, it can accommodate up to 36 guests and employs a 70-strong crew.

Gathering dust in London’s Canary Wharf and banned from venturing beyond British waters, the 58.5-metre Royal Huisman motor yacht Phi continues to make headlines three years into its ongoing legal troubles. First launched in 2021 and currently under a long-running detention order, the yacht is at the centre of a protracted battle concerning the UK’s Russian sanctions regime.

Despite her owner not explicitly appearing on any sanctions lists, UK authorities concluded that the vessel is, one way or another “connected to Russia”, leaving Phi in a state of maritime limbo until a final judgement is eventually delivered by the courts. Below is an overview of the yacht’s features, followed by a closer look at the ongoing sanction and appeal process.

Delivered by Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman in 2021, Phi stretches an impressive 58.5 metres (approximately 192 feet) in length, with a 9.73-metre beam and an internal volume of 495 gross tonnes. The fifth-largest yacht constructed by Royal Huisman — and proud to have the title — she sits at number 594 in the global rankings for largest yachts.

While Phi is currently not for sale — setting her apart from a massive 2,000 yachts currently listed on the market — her future remains uncertain, as the remainder of this article will explain. When her legal woes eventually conclude, she may be put on sale in pretty short order, her owner keen to forget the trouble she's caused, or the pair may finally get to sail away into the sunset together. Regardless, Phi also boasts a 22-knot cruising speed and accommodation for up to 12 guests across 6 rooms, as well as 11 crew.

Phi’s troubles began in March 2022, very shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, when then UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps exercised powers under the so-called Russia Regulations of 2019, being sure not to miss a good photo opportunity, as was his not-so-fondly remembered political style. Deeming Phi a “potentially Russian-owned” asset, the vessel was warranted indefinite detention in British waters. Ever since then, Phi has been moored in Canary Wharf. According to her captain, the yacht has suffered hull degradation, lapsed insurance, and even trespassers during her prolonged and reluctant stay.

Even though the yacht’s owner, Russian businessman Sergei Georgievich Naumenko, doesn't appear outright on any official sanctions list, the UK government pushed ahead with the restriction under the premise of a distant but tangible connection to the Russian regime, scoring some easy political points in the process. UK officials maintain that Phi remains only under a restriction of use, rather than an absolute denial of ownership. All of this means that maintenance, crew presence, and even a sale to a non-Russian buyer are theoretically permitted but, for now, the yacht must stay put.

In 2023, a High Court judge upheld the UK government’s decision, ruling that — although the seizure did interfere with the owner’s property rights, to put it politely — it did not breach human rights obligations and was valid in the context of a national, government-backed sanctions policy. Early in 2024, the Court of Appeal agreed, concluding that detaining Phi was a proportionate response to wider concerns about Russian-linked property.

The case ultimately advanced to the UK Supreme Court with a final hearing beginning on 16th January. Lawyers acting on behalf of Dalston Projects Ltd (Phi’s legally registered owner) and Mr Naumenko challenged the assumption that he is “connected to Russia” merely based on wealth or residency and that there is insufficient proof Phi’s detention would achieve the intended aim of pressuring the Russian regime.

UK government representatives, on the other hand, reaffirmed their position that the detainment was not a full confiscation, pointing out that the yacht could be sold to a non-Russian buyer at any point or maintained for as long as the detention continued, so long as it was not moved. The Supreme Court has now adjourned, with a final judgement expected in six to eight weeks.

In fact, Arnault specifically requested a superyacht that would be as quiet as possible. Feadship’s engineers worked to isolate guest and owner spaces from vibrations, ensuring restful nights and minimal engine hum wherever possible.

Powered by four MTU 16V4000M73 engines, Symphony can reach speeds of up to 22 knots, with a cruising speed around 16 knots. She also carries advanced at-anchor stabilisers to minimise rolling when moored. Her range is approximately 5,000 to 5,500 nautical miles, meaning transatlantic voyages are well within reach.

In addition to its engineering prowess, Symphony has been celebrated for adopting more eco-friendly practices. Its design accommodates a hybrid propulsion approach. Although details vary, reports often suggest up to 30% reduced energy usage compared to yachts of a similar size. Creole, a masterful 213-foot schooner once owned by fashion titan Maurizio Gucci, continues to bewitch boating enthusiasts almost a century after its launch.

Valued at $21 million USD and famed as the world’s largest wooden sailing yacht, the black-hulled beauty is currently moored in Palma de Mallorca’s port, undergoing its annual refit. Boasting a history intertwined with Hollywood icons, European royalty, Greek shipping barons, and the illustrious Gucci family, here’s how Creole sailed through a storied past to become an enduring symbol of luxury on the high seas.

Originally named Vira, Creole was first launched in 1927, crafted by British shipyard Camper & Nicholsons under the direction of Charles E. Nicholson, the era’s greatest naval architect. The boat was commissioned by Alexander Smith Cochran, a (very) wealthy American carpet magnate known at the time as the “richest bachelor in New York.”

Sadly for Cochran, his frail health stopped him from fully enjoying the schooner’s true potential. Fearing its towering masts, he insisted on them being cut down twice before attempting to cruise around Europe. Unsurprisingly, that first voyage proved to be a rough one, with the short-masted yacht rolling heavily in the Bay of Biscay. Soon after, Cochran placed Vira on the market...

The yacht’s name changed to Creole under a subsequent owner, Major Maurice Pope who, like Cochran, very rarely embraced the thrill of actual sailing. Several owners later, Sir Connop Guthrie restored Creole closer to Nicholson’s original vision and the reinvigorated vessel began winning regattas in Britain. However, as World War II loomed, the British Admiralty requisitioned Creole — renaming it Magic Circle —to serve as a minesweeper along the Scottish coast.

After the war, Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos acquired Creole, investing heavily in another restoration. Alas, in an all-too-familiar tale, Niarchos rarely used it after personal tragedies on board led him to abandon sailing altogether. Thereafter, the Danish Navy took the helm, using the historic schooner to rehabilitate drug addicts — something of a far cry from the opulence for which it was originally intended.

In 1983, Maurizio Gucci stepped in to rescue Creole. With a passion for the sea and an equally well-honed eye for craftsmanship, he poured millions into reviving the vessel. The refit lasted six years and spanned multiple shipyards, including Beconcini in Italy to Lürssen in Germany and Astilleros de Mallorca in Spain. Painstakingly restoring the interiors to evoke the Roaring Twenties from whence it came, the yacht once again featured antique furnishings, period artwork, and bespoke details that paid homage to the Gucci family’s knack for timeless style.

Returning her rigging to an impressive three-masted schooner configuration, Creole can reach a top speed of around 17 knots, making her swift for a wooden yacht of this size. Below deck, the yacht has six guest staterooms, all exuding vintage glamour with modern-day creature comforts. Creole carries a full crew of 16 and can accommodate up to eight guests on charters.

Maurizio Gucci’s tragic passing did not dim Creole’s lustre. His daughter, Allegra Gucci, inherited the yacht and has taken on the task of preserving it, but maintaining this nearly century-old schooner is not an easy feat. The black paint, a hallmark dating back to its original design, demands near-constant upkeep. Allegra estimates Creole requires at least $2 million USD in annual maintenance, including the yearly routine of hauling it out of the water for thorough checks. As a result, Creole commands a weekly charter rate starting at €189,000 from those seeking the Gucci magic.

From the wonderful Sophia Loren to King Juan Carlos of Spain, many have been dazzled by Creole. Racing enthusiasts, including Allegra herself, have captained Creole’s companion vessel, the 60-foot Avel, in many a summer regatta.

The $40 million USD yacht, carrying British tech billionaire Mike Lynch, dubbed 'the British Bill Gates', was destroyed in a violent storm off Sicily on August 19, killing seven people, including Lynch. Known for his innovative work in cybersecurity, Lynch was vacationing with family and friends when tragedy struck. The incident has since turned into a high-profile investigation, with Italian prosecutors have launched a criminal probe into multiple charges of manslaughter and negligent shipwreck.

As specialist divers reached the bottom of the wreckage, they made a surprising discovery of watertight safes containing encrypted hard drives. This tragedy has deeply shaken the yachting community and raised serious concerns about the safety of these majestic vessels in what was once considered a summer haven.

The incident with the Bayesian is just the latest in a series of misfortunes to have befallen the azure waters of the Medeittrenean. Only a week before, a 120-foot yacht, Wally Love, was driven aground near La Savina, Formentera, a Spanish island, in the wake of a fierce thunderstorm. And on August 10, the 154-foot Heesen yacht Atina succumbed to flames in the Bay of Olbia, Sardinia, eventually sinking after a massive blaze onboard took hold.

The pattern of misfortune extends beyond this summer.

In August 2023, the 90ft motor yacht Irmao caught fire and sunk off Formentera, while March this year saw the 87ft Ferretti motor yacht Gemini crash into the breakwater in Eceabat Marina, Çanakkale, as she negotiated the treacherous Dardanelles Strait.

The summer of 2022 proved equally dangerous for luxury vessels. August brought the 147-foot ISA motor yacht Aria SF to a fire that eventually saw her sink off the coast of Cap Martinet, Ibiza. July saw the 68-foot vessel smash into the rocks of Sardinia's shore, with a British life taken and six others injured. A similar disaster befell the 120-foot Pesa, a newly launched yacht that caught fire in Valencia's port, in April, just two years after its maiden voyage.

Even classic yachts are not immune to these maritime tragedies. In August 2022, it was the turn of Libra Y, 138 feet long and launched in 1977, which caught fire while berthed in a marina in Piraeus, Greece.

These recurring incidents in the summer months underline the Mediterranean as a hotbed for superyacht accidents, prompting the question: why are these luxury vessels facing such hazards?

Climate change has emerged as a prime suspect in these maritime incidents, with scientists pointing to freakish and increasingly dangerous weather patterns driven by warming waters in the Mediterranean.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorological Society, describes the severity of this warming trend. He points out that water temperatures around Sicily, where the Bayesian sunk, have reached approximately 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), approximately 3 degrees Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit) above the seasonal average.

These temperatures are some of the highest recorded in ambient water on the planet and can be a factor leading to phenomena such as storms and waterspouts.

Research supports this theory. AS 2022 study examining 234 waterspouts in the Spanish Mediterranean over three decades found that they were more likely to occur when sea surface temperatures were above 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit).

Although the International Panel on Climate Change has not created any definite link between climate change and waterspouts, they have indicated that conditions for their formation are increasing in frequency.

Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading, explained to CNN, "Global warming — and specifically warming of the Mediterranean Sea — is quite likely to lead to an intensification of a number of potentially dangerous weather systems in that region."

Giuliano Gallo, a former skipper who has crossed the Atlantic and authored several books on sailing, said that the Mediterranean is becoming more like the Caribbean, which has areas that many boats avoid at certain times of the year.

Despite concerns about warmer waters in the Mediterranean during the summer months, the yachting community should not be deterred from exploring these enticing seas.

However, this indicates the necessity for increased vigilance and stringent safety measures, ensuring that all navigational and safety protocols—from GPS accuracy to comprehensive emergency procedures—are rigorously maintained.

Many fires find their starting point in very ordinary sources that could happen to any ship: defective electrical systems, overloaded circuits, carelessly thrown-out cigarettes, defective fuel lines, and faulty gas-fired boilers. These major problem complexes sometimes prove to be the Achilles' heel of these floating luxury palaces.

However, some cases point to more unusual circumstances. In August 2023, while docked in the Livorno shipyard in Italy, the 183-foot superyacht project FB261 caught fire. Some speculated this may have resulted from a lightning strike or that the electrical protection systems of the new build were not activated.

Repair and maintenance yards hold some of the most serious risks, as this cautionary tale from Chula Vista, USA, attests. A $17 million, 31-meter yacht went up in flames during what was meant to be routine repairs, with the suspected culprit being: A welding torch that sparked an inferno, sending two to the hospital for carbon monoxide inhalation.

While most incidents appear to be accidental, a notable exception occurred in March 2022. Ukrainian engineer Taras Ostapchuk was taken into custody after attempting to sink the 450-foot superyacht Lady Anastasia. His motive was a protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as the yacht belonged to Alexander Mikheev, a Russian billionaire.

The PARSIFAL III, a 177-foot yacht, suffered a big mishap during an episode of the show's second Sailing Yacht season which first aired on May 17, 2021.

While trying to maneuver in bad weather, the yacht hit a dock because its engine broke down. In an explanation, Yacht's Captain Glenn Shephard said:

"Maybe my inputs were too much for the computer and it kind of, I don't know, froze or didn't react in the right way. I'm not really 100 percent sure. But I was pushing ahead and it was still moving backwards, which is not normal."

Some of the wreckage was visible floating in the sea after the accident. Luckily, no serious damage was caused in this crash. Launched in 2005, PARSIFAL III can accommodate up to 12 charter guests in a master suite, two double cabins, and two twin cabins. The yacht also has a Jacuzzi and two Open Bic sailboats for guests to play with.

The Bayesian, also created by Perini Navi, was not as lucky. Sailing in a sudden and strong squall that created too much wind and conditions for the yacht to handle, the vessel sank after its mast broke in half off the coast of Sicily near the fishing village of Porticello in the early hours of Monday.

Of the 22 people on board at the time of the tragedy, 15 were rescued, while six others lost their lives, among them being the chairman of Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, and tech tycoon Mike Lynch.

His daughter Hannah Lynch, 18, is still missing, and rescuers are frantically searching for her. Lynch was a British technology entrepreneur who achieved fame through his software company, Autonomy Corporation, which Hewlett-Packard bought for over $11 billion USD in 2011.
